How to save a GIF from X (Twitter)
X has no Save option for GIFs, because it stores them as small videos. Here's how to download one as a real GIF in a few seconds.
· 1 min read
Photos on X can be saved with a right-click or a long press. GIFs can't, and that isn't a bug.
Why there's no Save button
When someone uploads a GIF, X converts it into a short looping video and throws the .gif away. What plays in your feed with the GIF badge is an MP4. Your browser treats it as a video inside the page, not as an image you can save.
How to get it as a real GIF
- On the post, tap Share and choose Copy link.
- Open GifSuite and paste the link.
- Click Grab GIF.
- Pick a quality and download it as a GIF.
GifSuite finds the video behind the post and converts it back into a .gif file.
Which download should you pick?
- GIF works everywhere an image does: email, documents, chats, forums.
- MP4 is the original file from X. It's the smallest and the sharpest, and the best choice for WhatsApp, Instagram or posting again.
- Low, Medium or High trades file size against quality. Medium suits most uses; choose Low for a quick send.
If you just want to repost it on X
Skip the download. After grabbing the GIF, use Post on X. Your post plays the original GIF and credits the account that posted it, with nothing to upload.
